Derby County vs Birmingham City – Preview

Team News

Derby will be missing Jamie Ward who is missing with a hamstring injury.

Blues are hopeful that Curtis Davies will be fit to return but David Murphy will now be out for a while after having surgery on his knee.

Last Meeting

The last meeting was at St Andrews in March when Derby came back from 2-0 down to get a 2-2 draw. Erik Huseklepp and Marlon King had given Blues the lead.

Recent Form

Derby sit 13th three points ahead of Blues. They have lost their last two games but they have a good record at home this season.

Blues remain 19th after the defeat to Hull. They have lost only once away from home since the beginning of September.

I don’t know about you but I reckon that Blues at 3-0 down are a decent side.  They look dangerous and committed, play with energy and score goals.  It’s just a shame that they have to go three down in order to wake up.  As I predicted last week the pattern of results continued and Blues were duly hopeless  early on against Hull but it was good to see them bounce back and make a game of it.  There were promising signs and other than Steven Caldwell I didn’t think anyone particularly played that badly. Unfortunately any optimistic thoughts we have need to be countered with the knowledge that tomorrow’s match is live on Sky. We all know what a kiss of death that is.

Last week showed that while we can score goals our defence continues to be a concern. This has not been helped with the news that David Murphy has had to have an operation and will be out until January. Not having a settled line up has been a problem as has the form of Caldwell who has been found lacking, particularly for pace, more and more this season. He probably can’t be dropped though as Pablo Ibanez will not be fully fit yet. It was good to see Ravel Morrison get his first goal last week. We need more goals from midfield so we are not over relying on Marlon King. Perhaps new loan signing Robert Hall can help in that area although we’ll have to wait and see how much he actually plays.

I don’t have much to say about Derby other than that they gave us two tough games last season and we can expect them to do so again. They are one of those teams that are unlikely to finish in the playoffs or get relegated and will probably finish near to where they are now. I hear Derby is a good away day and the proximity to Birmingham will hopefully bring out a decent following despite it being on the telly. It used to be that we didn’t expect to get much from away games but this season we seem to be picking up points on our travels much more regularly. We’ll need to start playing from the start though as while comebacks are fun we don’t want to get into the habit of giving head starts. I’ve noticed that I only get the score correct when I predict draws so my prediction for this week is.

Derby 1 Blues 1

C’mon you Blue Boys!
