Blues are likely to field a similar team to last week as injured players are not yet ready to return and those likely to be moving soon are unlikely to feature.
Coventry will be missing defender Richard Wood who was injured in the midweek Carling Cup tie.
Last Meeting
Our last meeting was early this year in the FA Cup where Blues came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with the winner scored by Kevin Phillips. Current Blue Marlon King had scored early for Coventry.
The last league meeting took place in February 2009 at the Ricoh Arena and ended 1-0 to the home side after an early goal from Scott Dann who a few months later moved to St Andrews.
Recent Form
Both teams lost their opening games to East Midlands opposition. Blues lost away at Derby and Coventry went down 1-0 at home to Leicester.
Outlook
At the time of writing it looks like the game is going ahead (As 90% of you wanted) which we can all be thankful for. It did look for a time that there was a chance that the shopping expeditions of the local morons would mean its postponement but the threat has now passed. Now we can get back to the business of worrying about our football club.
Tomorrow’s game is our only real local derby of the season although I know a lot of fans don’t really consider Coventry to be a rival. We are usually united in our hatred of the Villa. It is a big game however in the sense that the club really needs a good win to calm the fears of fans worried about whether the squad we are left with will be able to compete this season. A comfortable win coupled with a good performance may even get the doom and gloom merchants to cheer up a bit. I’m not sure if I can remember what it’s like to walk away from St Andrews after one of those.
Of course it won’t be easy as while Coventry are one of the favourites for relegation they do have some good players. Also we can expect to be light up front again and most of the team is still to settle. We have some new faces who can come in and I think it will be September before Chris Hughton knows what his best team is. Still there were encouraging signs last week and hopefully the little mistakes won’t creep in like they did then. Boaz Myhill in particular needs to start instilling us with more confidence.
The first home game of the season is always special and this year I’m also interested in hearing what the new walk on music will be as apparently there will be no more Tamperer. I’ll be buying the new shirt and wearing it with pride.
