Blues v Stoke Brief Post Match Comments

This was a poor match with next to no chances. Martins, although clearly not sharp, looks like a decent player though.

No one really played well today despite McLeish’s commendable attacking formation. We huffed and puffed but created nothing. Stoke had a few half chances but were poor too.

We should have had a penalty in the 2nd half. The ball came over first it was tapped down by the hand of a Stoke defender and then a shot fired clearly hit Huth on the hand and the cheat, sorry BIG CHEAT, went down holding his face. The ref was conned, (mind you not surprising – Halsey has to be the worse ref on the circuit. I wouldn’t put him in charge of the West Devon U11’s!

This match had 0-0 all over it until the last minute of added on time and a shot re-bounding of the goalkeeper fell to Jerome who chipped it over and Zigic headed in the winner again. We didn’t deserve it, but we will take it.

With all the sides below us dropping points, we move to 14th still with games in hand.

Newcastle on Tuesday, on my birthday – so another 3 points would be ace Blues. (I reckon we’re 12 from definite safety).

  1. Bit harsh Kev. Thought it was a very solid display from Blues today. Second clean sheet in a row shows that the defensive four with Jiranek settled in are re-establishing some of their old consistency. Midfield worked hard and linked up well. Still a bit blunt up front but it was noticeable that Jerome looked sharper than he has for many a game when coming on as sub. Think we need to recognise that the squad is shaping up well and beating a team as physical and as well organised as Stoke is no mean feat.

  2. Fair points Johnners, I accept defensively we looked very solid. My criticism is that we had a very attacking line up, however there wasn’t much attacking and also we gave the ball away far too much for my liking.

Stoke got exactly what they deserved. They must be the worst team in the PL. It was a poor game but the only team trying to play were Blues. The referee was also a complete joke. Let’s just take the three points and move on.

  4. I have to agree. I thought Martins showed potential and Seb was our best player on the pitch by a country mile but overall a poor game. In fact my Nephew duly turned to me and said “looks like its nil-nil then” in the resigned manner of a kid that had been thinking this from 20 mins in and 30 seconds later we scored. Zigic again proving invaluable and a desperately needed 3 points but otherwise a match to forget.
