Another victory, 7th in a row first time since 1946. Also because of Wrexham’s defeat, we’re now 5 points clear at the top.
The biggest piece of news going into the game was Alsop being bought in for Peacock-Farrell. There has been much talk about BPF’s mistakes, my opinion is that those mistakes are always a possibility with the way we play. I thought he was unfortunate on Saturday, the pass back to him wasn’t great and their attacker anticipated well. A lot were calling for a change, I was prepared to continue to support him and not see him dropped. However CD decided to change it.
Huddersfield started strongly and had a chance early on. Alsop seemed to prefer long clearances early on, that affected the way we play in comparison to recently. The first half was scrappy with a few half chances, but we were nowhere near as fluid as we have been recently. I’m not blaming Alsop for that, I think the weather looked filthy, and definitely affected things. He made a good save from a free kick too. I have to give Huddersfield some credit too. They packed midfield which did affect things.
The second half started with Sampsted coming on for Gardner-Hickman. We began to look better, putting together some good moves. Alsop also seemed to have settled into the more familiar passing out from the back. Also I will say, he was very confident being prepared to come out to either clear or take control of the ball.
We finally took the lead just after the hour after an excellent run down the right with a ball put into the box that Stanno controlled, turned and gave Alfie May an easy opportunity which he passed into the net. That was his 5th of the season. We could have gone 2 up shortly after if it wasn’t for two excellent saves.
The game finished with us pushing to increase the score, Huddersfield didn’t have too much to offer in the second except for the odd foray.
Over all we were nowhere near as fluid, but as said, that was partly to do with the weather and Huddersfield’s formation. However the important thing is the fact we won. League winners have to learn ugly and we will definitely have to do that at times.
