A couple of days ago a very good friend of mine contacted me. He happens to be a Villa fan but for the sake of what I’m about to tell you, please can we put all that aside. Jezza told me that he was about to embark on a gruelling bicycle ride in Switzerland to raise money for the Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation.
A friend of Jezza’s, Philip White, sustained a terrible life changing injury doing a routine job in his garage which resulted in a serious neck injury rendering him quadriplegic. I won’t tell the full story here since Phil articulates his experience so much more succinctly than I ever could and the link to his account is here; https://www.wingsforlife.com/u
What has struck me is that Philip’s description of what he has had to endure contains not one shred of self-pity and moreover lauds the support of his wife, four children and the people who have helped him to achieve painfully small goals which nevertheless are huge achievements for him. Phil is a lifelong, passionate Crystal Palace fan and maintains the love of football and of his club despite all that has happened. He is a fellow football fan and his story demonstrates how life can suddenly change in a devastating way for any one of us out of nowhere. When I read what Phil had to say, it put the triviality of football into perspective and made me realise just how lucky I am. Blessings really are too many to count.
Please, take the time to read Phil’s words and if you can, please donate to Wings for Life. I know with the cost of living crisis that things are very tough for a lot of us but any amount, no matter how small will go a long way to helping this very worthy cause.
You can donate either on the link at the end of Phil’s account or via Jezza’s Just Giving link here: https://www.justgiving.com/fun
To all my regular readers, fellow Bluenoses and those of any other football persuasion, thank you for your time and if you are able to, your donation.
Keep Right On.
