Let’s move our gaze away from the gloom and doom of the present situation at Blue, because on Saturday it’s ten years since that amazing day at Wembley. TEN YEARS! Where has that gone!
I posted this blog, as my take on the day after the game. So what are your memories?
Well, we’d like to know. So tell us your memories in the comments section below this post. Were you at the game? Did you watch it at home? What were your thoughts / reactions when Oba scored? Tell us – we’d love to share in the memory of what was an incredible afternoon.
Couldn’t go but watched on TV – hoped for something but honestly thought we’d be well beat – amazing day and unbelievable game – never forget it
I was at the game with my son, nephew, and my late sister. My sister and I both agreed before the match that we had no chance of winning and decided let’s just enjoy the day out! My son and nephew placed a bet on the Blues to win, and my sister and I were highly amused by their blind optimism. What a shock we both had! The Blues were absolutely brilliant that day, and thoroughly deserved the win. However, typical Blues, we get relegated a few weeks later and were absolutely gutted. I have been asked the agonizing question, would I swap the Carling Cup win for staying in the Premier league. The answer initially would have been absolutely not. However, if we had stayed in the Premier league right up until now, then I would say yes. With the position we find ourselves in now, in real danger of being relegated, with an obsessed defensive manager, it would be a ‘no brainer’. I still have very fond memories of that day, not only for the win, but also for being with my sis. That day was brilliant but is now in the past, and as of now the future looks really bleak. We are run by a naive Chinese Board, with a one dimensional, unimaginative,‘never play two up front’ manager. Oblivion is on the horizon, let’s hope that we can do the ‘Great Houdini Escape Act’ once again for the umpteenth time. KRO.
When the winner went in I just looked at the linesman and thought is he going to rule it out?? Not because there was any reason to but because that’s what happens when you support Blues. But no the goal stood. I think I sobered up about 8 months later.
Good idea Kev for a bit of escapism from the doom and gloom. Here goes. We arrived at Wembley full of wonder and if honest a great dollop of dread against the mighty Arsenal and the bullying Arsenal Wenger. Next to me taking his seat was a complete stranger whom I had never met before. Immediately we didn’t like each other as our footballing views were as wide as the Atlantic- he simply was a misery. As the game progressed to halftime he was still critical of our players and even more so of Zigic and McLeish. Second half there was no respite from my fellow bluenose and our bickering nearly boiled over – we simply detested each other. When the magical moment arrived when extra time beckoned and Martins stroked in the winner-we turned to each other and hugged each other for what would have been the longest in living memory! All goes to show what a crazy, odd, unpredictable lot we wonderful Bluenoses are.
Ha ha, I love this story!
On my way out – in a daze – I couldn’t find my way to the station so I asked a policeman. He pointed the way and said, without a trace of irony, “You keep right on to the end of the road…”. I couldn’t believe it!
My initial memory of the game was that Arsenal had battered us in the second half but- obviously – I’ve since rewatched the whole game and that “battering” lasted about 20 minutes. The fact is, we were the better team on the day and deserved to win. Great memories, great memories.
I arrived at Heathrow on a flight from Bogotá at about 1.30 pm. By the time I had cleared Customs it was too late to do anything other than find a television in the airport. I watched the entire match on my own and without commentary – not what I would have chosen but still hugely enjoyable!
Would I have agreed to an all expenses paid trip to Colombia months previously if I had known Blues would reach the final? Maybe not!
My one son flew in from USA to join me snd his brother for the journey from St A. Better to travel in hope but wow front seats in upper gallery astonishing support snd sat mingled with the occasional Arsenal fan. Euphoria. A lifetime memory to go with celebrations on the villa pitch in 63
