We rectified matters somewhat against Rotherham, but then blew it again against Burton…on the telly. We had seemed to have put that particular ‘curse’ to bed, but it reared its potato…I mean ugly…head once again in the Brewers’ ground.
To be fair, the Burton defeat was coming. Forest wasn’t an unfair result, and Rotherham aren’t bottom of the league for nothing – another managerial scalp left St Andrews in tatters – yet how did they manage to score two goals against what was such an airtight defence, previously? Let’s hope the Burton result gave our lads (and GR) the proverbial kick up the jacksy they all needed. I’d like to see the return of the Pole in the Goal, too. Nothing against the understudy, but if Tomasz is fit enough to be on the bench, he’s fit enough to be in between the sticks!
Defence? Grounds is suspended, so Wiggins will have to come in, Shotton, Spector and Morrison. Midfield? Maghoma, Davis, Kieftenbeld and Cotterill with an attack of Donaldson and Adams. Jutkiewicz has shown some form in front of goal, but his form has coincided with our dip, sadly. Rowett has some thinking to do in advance of our twelve toed second city brethren’s arrival… I wonder, do they call us eight toes? Hmmm….
The Vile, as I like to call them, arrive on the back of an unbeaten in three run…two wins (against Fulham and Reading and a draw against Wolves). I don’t grudge Bruce a move to that lot, if I’m honest. If I had to put my hand on my heart and say I’d rather he did or didn’t go there, then I’d rather he didn’t, but I can’t begrudge every Blues player or manager the idea they could end up there at some point in their career, any more than I begrudged Liam Ridgewell holding aloft the Carling Cup for us, simply because he was stupid enough to wear claret pink and baby blue, once upon a time 😉 I wish Brucey well, though I suspect he won’t get the easiest of rides from the bedsheet wetters/writers over the expressway…
As ex-players of ours are at a premium at Vile Park, it’s down to us to drown out the opposition as they try to gee up their new ‘hero’, our very own ex-boss, Steve Bruce. The Manchester United Geordie boy who has brought success (and a modicum of failure at times, too) to Sunderland, Palace and Hull, too. Let’s hope he gives us all a wave and irritates the heck out of his new fans. Let’s focus on supporting our own manager, rather than barracking someone else’s! He’s made his decision, so let’s hope he regrets it, come the end of the season, when his new side fail to make the grade. The Wolves job’s available again, Steve!? Anybody tempted to boo him, ask yourself the question, would you swap him for Rowett today? I think we all owe Bruce a debt of gratitude, but I wouldn’t swap him.
I’m going to predict a nervy 2-1 win as we try to regain our top six placing. Goals from Donaldson and Jutkiewicz (from the bench) will hopefully avenge our 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat, that I’m sure most even minded Villa fans would agree we deserved to win…and most biased Aston Villa fans, and Tim Sherwood would agree they masterminded an amazing victory (rolls eyes).
Win this and we we could rise to fifth. If we lose, we could drop as low as 10th. The Vile are six points behind us, so we’re in no danger of them overtaking us, but they’d certainly take a lot of pride out of beating us on our own turf at this stage of the season. They were nine points behind us a week ago. A defeat, and they could be three points behind, breathing down our necks. Let’s hope we can relive some of those Steve Bruce years and show some real derby spirit. Come on you Blues. This is why we wanted them relegated isn’t it!?

The strikers at your disposal apparently had an arrangement with Gary Gardner today. At 1:45 today, Aston Villa FC had to concede that for now the city has to remain Birmingham City FC’s. The Villa remain 6 points behind. Long may it continue. If Villa are ‘mighty’ then Birmingham City are six points and three wins mightier 😉

I admit 0-4 was a bit off the mark and we were not at our best. But you lot could only muster up 1 shot on target and your suppose to be the form team ?. I know we can get better and become a force in this league as I see no other teams that are better except Norwich or Newscast. Still a point is a point and Steve Bruce was the happier. I also do so think you had the referee in your pockets as a couple of tackles on Adoman and Ayew were red cards

Villa were the form team too going into the match, so your comments are pretty ironic having not been beaten in three (four now) and we’d just been beaten by Burton!
With fifteen fouls registered from both teams by the ref it doesn’t seem like the ref was in anybody’s pockets – certainly he could have given us the goal that was very close to over the line but didn’t. I hope for your sake you are in the play off position come April 2017, but I fear you’ll be looking up at us by then, as we’ve not been outside the top ten of the division these last two years and our team know what they’re doing. Villa may well have thrown off the shackles of defeats, but have yet to prove they can do much beyond draw (Fulham, Reading and Rotherham your only wins so far)…
