Brighton vs Birmingham City – Preview

Team news

Hayden Mullins and Marlon King are suffering from illness and are doubtful for this game.  If they can’t make it they would join David Murphy, Paul Caddis and Pablo Ibanez on the sidelines.

Brighton will be missing striker Craig Mackail-Smith and right back Bruno Saltor is a doubt with a groin injury.

Last Meeting

Both games last season ended as draws. The match at the Amex Stadium ended 1-1 with Nathan Redmond scoring for Blues.

Recent Form

Brighton are two points clear at the top having won their last five games. They are unbeaten at home and have so far conceded only one goal.

Blues are nineteenth with two wins and three defeats from their last six. I choose not to remember what happened in their last game.

Outlook

A quick recap. Last week we suffered our worst home league defeat for a very long time with a performance that had us running out of negative adjectives to describe it. Three of our already thin defence are out for at least four weeks and we have been forced to bring in a man that nobody likes due to him breaking Damien Johnson’s jaw a few years back. We are just a few points outside the bottom three and on Saturday we play the team at the top of the league. Not exactly looking rosy is it?

I bought my ticket for this game before the Barnsley debacle but I’m still looking forward to this trip. I have never visited Brighton’s stadium before (Or the town for that matter) and the late kick off (Not on TV thankfully) means that I can spend more time than usual in the town beforehand. It also looks like it’ll be a decent sunny day. It’s just a shame that we have to finish the day sitting through a football match where we are likely to get stuffed.

A lot has been said about the manager in the last week but I’m still in the “give him a bit longer” camp.  Our league position after such a small number of games is not a concern but the performances are.  The slightly random approach to team selection is also worrying and even without the injuries I wouldn’t like to try and guess the team that will start tomorrow.  You’d like to start with ten different outfield players but we don’t have the resources for that so I’d recommend that we just try to keep it tight and flood the midfield.  If King isn’t fit then I’d leave Lita alone up from with maybe Redmond, Morrison or Ambrose playing in a deeper role.  I expect Spector will have to fill in somewhere in defence so maybe Morgaro Gomis could come into the midfield.  We can always throw Nikola Zigic on later if we’re still in the game.

So here’s hoping that the team and the fans can pull themselves together and at least put in a good effort on Saturday.  With that in mind I’m going to make an optimistic prediction.

Brighton 3 Blues 1

C’mon you Blue Boys

  1. All you can ask is that Blues give it their all, if it aint good enough and the opposition take the points then the players aint good enough, but all we ask is that they give it their all.

  2. I wouldn’t assume that the outcome of this game is a foregone conclusion. You had a bad day and teams often bounce back. You also have a seriously strong squad, on paper at least. Either way and regardless of the result, you will be assured of a warm welcome in Brighton and at The Amex. I hope you, and all your fellow Blues, enjoy your trip.

  3. Early on in the season I was planning to go to this game but the timing wasn’t right and I had too many things to do this weekend. I went to the Amex at the end of last season and liked it. Wish I could be there tomorrow.
I’m not sure if links to Flickr work in Comments but if they do here’s my link to a photo of the very nice concourse at the Amex /7103808243/]
