Terry McDermott

Lee Clark has brought in a veritable army of backroom staff to replace the Norwich Four.

Derek Fazackerley, first team coach, Malcom Crosby, (not Bing Crosby or – indeed – Bill Cosby) chief scout (not to be confused with Sir Robert Baden Powell) and Mark Crossley… (definition courtesy of freedictionary.com)

Adv. 1. crossly – in an ill-natured manner; “she looked at her husband crossly”

…as goalkeeping coach.  Trevor McDonald is a newsreader, not our new assistant manager, if you want to know more about him go here….

Our new assistant manager, in all seriousness, is Terence “Terry” McDermott.  Yes, the one you kept thinking was Graeme Sounness, when you were collecting ‘Football 81 stickers’.  Rather ironically, he was replaced at Newcastle United, as Assistant Manager, by a certain Chris Hughton.  You may remember him as “the one who replaced the ginger.”  Which may well be how digestives replaced ginger nuts as most popular biscuit at McVities.  Ahem.

McDermott won five League Championship (now Premiership) medals, three European Cup (now Champions League) winner medals, a UEFA cup (now Europa League) winner’s medal and three League Cup (now called that cup Arsenal couldn’t win against Blues) winner’s medals, with Liverpool.  A winning mentality then.  He made two FA Cup Finals without winning the trophy, so he should feel right at home at St Andrews.  Heh heh.   He has also played twenty five matches for England, scoring three goals.

He was the Professional Footballer’s Association Player of the Year, in 1980, so could well be teaching our youth team a thing or two about being ‘the model professional’.

In management, he has worked as assistant manager to Kevin Keegan (twice), including a Championship promotion season, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder and Sam Allardyce at Newcastle United, then made his way to Huddersfield, where he was a certain Lee Clark‘s assistant for the best part of three largely unbeaten (though admittedly un-promoted) seasons.  Strangely, Wikipedia suggests he was manager of Newcastle in his own right in 1997, with a one hundred percent draw record….which taken out of context adds to the doom some of the ‘mongers’ had, about Huddersfield’s record unbeaten run being populated with draws.  In context, it has to be pointed out that he was manager for one week, and oversaw only one match…a  draw.

Ladies and gents, Joys and Sorrows presents the new Birmingham City Assistant Manager, Terry McDermott…

  1. Not quite accurate. On 22 February 2008, Hughton was appointed first team coach (not assistant manager) at Newcastle United, joining Kevin Keegan’s coaching team that had been put together by KK on his appointment on the 5th February. Note, Terry Mac was already at the club when KK returned, having returned in 2005. He had served under Souness, Roeder and Allardyce (Keegan’s predecessors) prior to becoming Keegan’s assistant manager again.

On 8 September 2008, Hughton was named caretaker manager of Newcastle following the departures of Keegan, Terry McDermott and Adam Sadler. Hughton didn’t take over from McDermott, but was railroaded into keeping a sinking ship afloat until Joe Kinnear was appointed – upon which he was relagated back to putting the cones out. When Kinnear left CH was re-appointed briefly as caretaker before Saint Shearer proved kess than adept at walking on water and Hughton was caretaking again..

It wasn’t until well into the 2009-10 season that Hughton lost the caretaker tag – in Ashley’s mind I don’t think he ever did. Meanwhile Terry Mac is a demon at head tennis, and can still trap a ball on a sixpence.

  2. Was about to correct this myself, but look above. Spotlight are pretty spot on(sorry about that one).

Terry McDermott is a good guy having around. You could alway watch him and Keegan kidding around, a players man i suppose with good mood and humour.

Good luck to you guys at B’ham!

  3. At first I thought this article was ridiculous. Then I got to paragraph 6 and decided it was pointless too. Thanks for wasting 3 minutes of my life. You’re worse than cigarettes!!!!

  4. Steve I know you regularly read our stuff and I’m sorry that you didn’t appreciate Russ’ sense of humour above.

The other points of error are noted. We pride ourselves in getting things right, but we’re not perfect. Comments noted and we’ll do our best to get things right next time.

We do appreciate you reading the site.

  5. I have to correct you Kev, I don’t read your stuff that often. Maybe that’s why I was not in sync with this comedy article.

  6. John – because I DO rate him. Hence, “A winning mentality then.” and “could well be teaching our youth team a thing or two about being ‘the model professional’.”

Instead of your negative post, why not comment on whether or not YOU rate him?

Steve-O, you obviously need to get a new moniker, as someone else calls Steve-O regularly reads (and posts) on Joys and Sorrows articles. As for ‘comedy article’, you flatter me. It was supposed to be a brief introduction to our new assistant manager, with a few light hearted links in it. If it was over your head (or – admittedly – below it!) I wholeheartedly apologise. Apologies to Spotlight Kid, I read the Birmingham Mail article on Terry, which seems to have misled me. Thanks Mag, I’m guessing you’re a Toon from the username and Keegan viewpoint. Would you rather have Chris Hughton these days, or is he just a nice piece of Tyne history?

  7. Steve

Sorry mate, not doing very well are we? As Russ said, a “Steve-O” comments pretty regularly and so I thought it was yourself.

I hope that you will visit us again.

    Kev
