Euro 2012 – England v France – Brief post match thoughts

I thought this was a decent performance by England, they more than matched the French who were limited to very few chances.  In the first half England were the better team and looked dangerous on the break with the pace of Young, Welbeck and Oxlade-Chamberlain.  They had the best chance early on but Milner couldn’t finish with the goal at his mercy. I thought the center of France’s defence looked week and this was proved with the poor way they defended England’s goal.  Joe Hart was a little unsighted for the equaliser but he probably feels that he should have done better having got a hand to it.

In the second half England faded a bit with was partially due to fitness with some players being a bit short of match practice.  The thirty degree heat wouldn’t have helped either.  They gave the ball away a bit too much but France only threatened with long shots despite all the possession.  Of the two teams the French will be the least happy especially considering that they brought their own ref with them.  That guy needs to have obstruction explained to him.  Despite that there’s little else to complain about.  Roy Hodgson could have brought the subs on earlier but to be honest the best midfield options are injured so he doesn’t have a lot to play with.

All in all a good result.  A win and a draw from the next two will see us through.  Well done boys.
