Coventry City 1 Birmingham City 1 – Brief post match thoughts

This was a game of two halves, the first was dreadful the second was better but frustrating.  Blues had more of the game throughout but the quality of the final ball wasn’t there.  We had eleven corners and a number of free kicks around the box but their keeper was barely troubled.  The wing players Townsend and Burke did OK and weren’t helped by the lack of movement up front particularly from Huseklepp.

In the first half the biggest cheer was for a shot by McSheffrey that was so wide it turned into a pass for the full back.  Half time bought a game that featured a star prize of a towel that could be bought in the shop for a whopping £12.99 (and we think we have money problems!) and both sides were noticeably better afterwards.  Typically Gary McSheffrey scored but Blues equalised quickly from a long throw that bounced more than expected and fell kindly to King.  After that Zigic came on and had a number of half chances although in the seven minutes of added time I thought Coventry looked more like winning it.  Jordon Mutch was sent off towards the end for taking an appalling free kick and giving the ball away a lot.  The official reason was an elbow but I thought the free kick was a greater crime.  The elbow looked accidental.

So two points dropped or possibly one gained, we won’t know until the end of the season.  As I write this we are still in the playoff places so promotion is still possible if we can improve.  I’m beginning to worry that the number of games played is catching up on us though.  I really thought we missed Murphy’s overlapping runs today so the sooner he’s back the better.

Some positives (To keep Kev happy)

1.  Townsend looked dangerous.

2.  Hull and Blackpool also dropped points.

3.  There was a big Blues following in good voice.

4.   It didn’t rain.

5.   I had a Chicken Balti Pie that didn’t fall apart when I ate it.

6.  I finally got a prediction right!

  1. If Cardiff win then it will be 2 points dropped by Birmingham, if not, the point keeps Blues clinging onto a play off spot so then it becomes a very important point.

  2. Since the new loan players have come in we haven’t won a game. I’m concerned that we should really have got at least 7 points from the last 3 games and got only 2. Not good enough!! Unless we can shake ourselves and put some wins together soon, it’s gonna be all for nothing. There is no point to the great season we’ve had unless we end up in the top 6. Personally, I don’t think we’ll do it..

  3. I got the prediction right as well 😉 which i am well happy about as its about the 1st this season.
A minor lay off now for Mutch could well do wonders,i think he needs a rest.
West Ham booed off today so its not exactly rosy in the top two.

  4. It isnt the result at Coventry that has affected Blues because any point away from home is a good point. Its the home results against Forest and Derby, 1 point from a possible 6. It has seen us slip out of the play off zone now and unless we win our 5 remaining home games, will struggle to make the play offs. Another difficult fixture at Leicester on tuesday and for me its a must win game to try and get that top 6 place back. More importantly Blues have to win at home.
