Birmingham City vs Peterborough – Preview

Team News

Morgaro Gomis is still out and will join Jordon Mutch on the sidelines.

Peterborough have no new injury worries.

Previous Meeting

You have to go all the way back to March 1995 when Blues were in division 2 (Now League One) for the last meeting which ended in a 1-1 draw.  The reverse fixture at St Andrews the previous September ended 4-0 to Blues.  Peterborough have never won at St Andrews.

Recent Form

Peterborough sit 11th in the table one point ahead of Blues.  They have won three and lost three of their last six matches and have been involved in some high scoring games.  In total they have scored thirty-two times and conceded twenty nine in their sixteen games so far.  Only Southampton have scored more.

Blues loss at Reading broke an unbeaten streak going back to September.  They are still unbeaten at home however and have conceded only one goal there all season.

Outlook

Can it really be only twelve days since we last played a game?  It seems like forever .  I expect the team appreciated the chance to recharge their batteries but I hate these international breaks especially when England don’t have a competitive fixture.  Tomorrow will start another period of five games in fifteen days so the rest would have been needed.  At least we get to play on a Saturday for a change.

As we haven’t played Peterborough for a long time the only real link between the two clubs is that Barry Fry is their Director of Football.  It’ll be the first time he has returned to St Andrews in an official capacity.  Do they do a “Welcome back to St Andrews” greeting for directors?  We never got to find out with David Gold.  I wonder if on arrival Barry will feel the need to buy half a dozen new players for old time’s sake.  The team he now looks after are not one for the goalless draw as their goals for and against totals will testify to. They have been involved in a lot of exciting high scoring games so it’ll be a good test for our previously strong defence.  Here’s a tip for Chris Hughton.  Don’t play Liam Ridgewell, give Murphy a go.

As players have been rested there is no reason not to play the strongest midfield and attack even though we have a game against Burnley on Tuesday.  The only player that had a long trip for International duty was Jean Beausejour but as he got sent straight back again that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.  I’ll expect it’ll be Wood and King up front again even though the former missed a few against Reading and the latter has only scored penalties in all his league games so far.  In recent weeks creating chances has been the problem but they would hope to get a few good openings against a team that is conceding almost two goals a game.

This will be the first of two home games against mid table opposition where good results could see us moving into the top six.  After that there are tough away trips to Blackpool and Cardiff so we need to get the points in the coming days.  Recent performances tell me that it’s not unreasonable to expect a win tomorrow and I’m even going to risk predicting one.

Blues 2 Peterborough 1

C’mon you Blue Boys.
