Birmingham City vs Burnley – Preview

Team News

Blues will still be missing Morgaro Gomis, Liam Ridgewell and Jordon Mutch.

Ross Wallace will face a late fitness test but Welsh international and Wolves loanee Sam Vokes could make his first start with Charlie Austin and Martin Paterson rules out.

Last Meeting

The last game took place in February 2009 at St Andrews and finished 1-1.  Kevin Phillips equalised an early Burnley goal which proved to be a luck escape as Burnley could have been 4-0 up in the first ten minutes.

Recent Form

Blues have now gone three games without a win in the league and are stuck in mid table.  More worryingly they have scored only once in those games.

Burnley have lost their last three games and now sit just outside the relegation zone. They have won three and lost four away from home so far this season.

Outlook

Saturday’s game against Peterborough was encouraging in terms of performance but unfortunately resulted in more dropped points.  Goal scoring has started to be a problem and your’re always likely to suffer a sucker punch if you can’t kill off a game.  Peterborough scored with their only shot on target but that was all they needed to do.  We need to create more chances and put away more of those that are created.  One area that could definitely improve is goals from midfield with only Chris Burke making much of a contribution in that area.

With goals from midfield in mind I’d like Wade Elliot be given a chance in the centre, possibly alongside N’Daw.  He looks to get forward more than Keith Fahey and there is also the chance that the curse of the returning player might take effect.  He scored nineteen goals for Burnley during his time there.  The defence and attack are still doing OK so need to worry too much there.  Burnley are suffering a bit with injuries especially up front so I’d hope we can keep them out.  It’s just a case of whether we can put the ball in the net at the other end.

So with Burnley on a bit of a poor run and us needing the three points to go eighth it’ll be very dissapointing if our recent pattern of dominating but not winning continues.  With away games against top six sides in our next two games we need to take this opportunity or we risk losing ground on the playoff sides.  I beliveve automatic promotion will be very difficult but I’m going to be optimistic that our luck will change for this one.

Blues 1 Burnley 0

C’mon you Blue Boys
