Bristol City v Birmingham City Brief Post Match Thoughts

This was my 1st live game of the season, actually it is the 1st game since the cup final, so was looking forward to it. I met up with Aylesburyblue and Bazza who does the View From the South reports, and we watched the game together. Bazza will be doing his normal write up, so I’ll just offer a few thoughts.

It was nice to meet Tatts before the game, and we had a bit of a chat about our recent run. I also bumped into an old friend of mine called Roy Hobbins, who I haven’t seen for a while – so good to see you again mate.

There was a good turn out from Bluenoses, especially after the European Tour part 3 mid-week! I reckon there were around 2000 there.

I was pleased to see an attacking line up with King and Wood starting. There is definitely more urgency about the side, but I am particularly impressed with Beausejour. He really puts himself about the park whether we are attacking or defending.

We created several good chances, and if it wasn’t for “England’s Number 10!” (that chant made me laugh), we would have gone in possibly 4 up. Actually a special mention to James, he pulled off an amazing double point blank save in the 1st half. (Mind you, he was nutmegged for the winner!)

I said to Bazza that I was a bit concerned about the fact that we only had a 1 goal lead, and sure enough Bristol City did attack us more in the 2nd, but they didn’t create too many chances. The crowd the other end seemed to think they should have had a pen, but having just seen it on SSN, I don’t think it was.

Our 2nd half was definitely under par, with a few players not playing very well. However I’m happy to put it down to a post Europe tiredness. Burke took his winner well, although it did look like he was offside.

Just a comment about Bristol, their confidence looks totally shot and it isn’t surprising that they haven’t won at home yet. Even when they got a couple of chances, due to poor defending, they completely fluffed them. Cue chants of “that’s why you’re going down!” Although it was funny, I do genuinely feel for them. We’ve been in that situation where you can’t buy a win for love nor money. They were unfortunate in the 1st when Boaz Myhill put a cracking shot onto the bar – but they didn’t have too many other chances in the 1st and as I said in the 2nd they fluffed the few possibilities they had. Our 2-0 deficit was probably about right on balance of the game.

We are beginning to build some momentum and I am beginning to believe that we WILL be in the proper promotion mix come the end of the season.
