This is a game that we completely out played Sunderland…. for about 5 minutes! Jerome was put clean through but a good save prevented us getting the early lead. As the game went on, Sunderland began to take charge. Foster pulled off a number of great saves to keep us in the match.
As we headed to half time, I tweeted that we needed a lift – so it was very kind of Sunderland to provide it. A ball had been put through and Bardsley chased it back. The keeper called for it and they both stopped, Seb who had run after it – got a touch on it and we were 1-0 up!
We needed a good start in the 2nd half, we didn’t get it. Someone tweeted that Sunderland were all over us in the 1st half. I thought that was a bit generous – however it was definitely justified in the 2nd. Wave upon wave of Sunderland attacks – great saves from Foster and scrambled clearances from defenders. However you know what happenes if you don’t score when you’ve been in charge – we do, it happens to us a lot – the other side score.
Half way though the 2nd half, just after Hleb had come on for KP – he released Craig Gardner, who belted in a shot from 25 yards 2-0. We continued to be put under pressure, and Foster continued to make good saves. We saw the half out and 3 valuble points and +2 goals in the GD column.
The other results all went for us again with Blackpool, Blackburn and West Ham all losing. We are 14th, 5 points clear – well 6 really as we have a superior GD. I reckon we are almost safe, 1 more win / 2 draws should preserve our Premier League status.
Just as a final note, we can’t have played much worse than that yet we won. There were a couple of injuries to Johnson, Jerome and Seb. Hopefully none serious.
We have 2 away games now. Chelsea on Wednesday, (our game in hand), and then away at Liverpool next Saturday. The good news is, we could lose both but still not be in the relegation places.
Good stuff – 3 needed points. Another win and a draw should do it for us – watch out Wolves and Fulham, but it would be good to get to 42 before Fulham visit.
And hats off to Eck for getting Blues to refocus after that post-Cup slump: 7 points in the last 3 games is pretty good going.
