As we enter Wembley Week, here is a short memory this time from one of our forum regulars, Margaret.
My first memory of Wembley is tinged with regret; I had a chance to watch Blues in a major cup final and didn’t take it.
When we reached the semi final in 1956 my dad told me that we could afford to go to either the semi final or the final but not both; the choice was mine. I didn’t trust them to get through to the final so I chose Hillsborough instead of Wembley.
The Hillsborough game was brilliant. I think it was the first time that Keep Right On was sung by our fans, it was certainly the first time I heard it at a game. However, I was left with a feeling of guilt as I thought that if I had only had the faith to believe in my team I could have gone to Wembley, and if I had been there at the final willing them on to win that might have just swung the game in our favour. I felt that the loss was somehow my fault.
I did get to Wembley eventually, for the Leyland Daf in 1991 and the Auto Windscreens in 1995. So I’ve been to Wembley twice and seen two Blues’ victories. I’m hoping to see them win again on my third visit , but even if they lose I’ll know that I did all I could to support them and it won’t be my fault.
