Brief Post Match Thoughts Blues v Coventry City 5th Round FA Cup

Well I really enjoyed that game. Both teams spent the whole game trying to attack and score, it was refreshing to see!

McLeish made wholesale changes, with the following line up:

Doyle, Parnaby, Ridgewell, Murphy, Jiranek, Bentley, Beausejour, Hleb, Fahey, Phillips and Zigic. On the bench Foster, Mutch, Jerome, Larsson, and Debyshire.

The format was 442 and with Bentley, Beausejour and Hleb – you felt we would create chances. The game started with Zigic nearly giving us the lead, but Coventry scored from their two main chances with goals from King and Wood. Both were well taken, however there had to be questions about the positioning of the defence.

Having given Coventry the usual 2-0 lead we give, we began to step up the pace and the deficit was reduced bt a cracking 25 yarder from Bentley. Bentley gave Coventry no end of problems however we were unable to score again before half time.

At half time, I would imagine Coventry would have been a little disappointed. They played very well in the 1st half and just about deserved the lead however the Blues had shown that they were not out of the game.

After the break we created lots of chances before we scored the equaliser from the unlikely source of Stuart Parnaby, scoring his first goal for the club. Both Zigic and Hleb were being a handful although Beausejour had a disappointing game.

Finally our pressure told and the goal came from Super Kev, (not me, the Phillips version). Once again we had come back from 2-0 down to take the lead.

Both sides continued to create chances, and both could have added to the score, but it remained 3-2 and the Blues progressed to the 5th round. A couple of tweets that came were 1. what’s the betting we’ll get the Villa in the 5th round, and 2nd the treble is still on! 🙂

I must give Coventry credit. They came and played with no fear and created lots of chances. I will be amazed if they go down, but hopefully will be able to go on a promotion run if not this season – next season.

The crowd gave KP MOM but I have to disagree, I thought that Bentley was brilliant today and he gets it from me.

Now, as was said on the forum this week, we just need to get a hypnotist in before each game to convince them we are 2-0 down before we start!

  1. Really good fun game, although it’s a bit strange being at a home game where there are almost as many away fans.
