Well it finished 2-2, but I thought after the hour we would get nothing, and would have deserved as much.
We were very poor in the 1st half, a poor challenge by Carr gave a penalty away which Bent scored. The challenge was a 50 50 – however the fact he went in the way he did in the position he was, meant the ref COULD give the pen.
Carr got away with a lot of challenges last season, and he will have to concentrate this year because I think he’ll be targeted.
McFadden came on for Fahey at half time.
Despite being down to 10 men, Sunderland doubled their lead when Carr scored a long distance OG off his head! Clearly not his day.
Zigic came on for O’Connor and Carr was replaced by Gardner, but we failed to take advantage of the 10 man opposition. We just couldn’t get any key passes together, lots across the park but nothing dangerous. Then on 77 minutes, we opened up their defence with a Larsson cross and Dann scored our 1st Premier League goal of the season.
From this moment on, it was ALL the Blues. Zigic and Jerome both had decent chances and we started to look dangerous. Sunderland started to defend deeper and deeper. Dann nearly equalised on 83 minutes as the ball glanced off his forehead from a Larsson cross.
Then with just 2 minutes to go the ball pinged around the box and it went in with Zigic, Dann and Ridgewell all involved. It appears that the final touch did come off Ridge.
Aff said on the forum that if we get anything out of this game, it would be a travesty. Mersey Pete said – welcome travesty! This showed some of the character we showed last year and I’m happy to take a point away from the Stadium of Light. I just hope we can build on this.
Zigic looked dangerous and Larsson looked better than he did much of last season. Also McFadden looked hungry coming off the bench.
Just one point, we do need to sort the defence. We looked better with Gardner on than Carr, but I do think McLeish does need another defender.
Over all a decent start to the season. Well done for the fight back Blues.
On a separate one, what about Blackpool winning 4-0 at Wigan. I have been saying that Wigan look like definite relegation candidates. Well done Blackpool though.
