So as the weekend approaches, once again we are 1 win away from promotion. To be honest, I don’t think my nerves can take any more!
I’ve followed the Blues since the heady days of Francis and Latchford, Burns and Pendrey and we’ve NEVER done it the easy way!
The Blues confuse me. We have had, for the past 3 seasons, pretty decent squads and yet have failed to play to their potential. Yes I know we got promoted under Bruce in his last full season – but we do have to thank Derby for crashing and burning. What is it about the club that somehow doesn’t allow us to fully achieve? I think I’ll leave that for another day.
Back to the subject in hand, the dreaded “P” word.
Can we do it? Well yes we can.
Can we blow it? Well yes we can.
Which Blues is going to turn up, I have no idea?
The key issue for me this season, is our inconsistency, or is it? In truth we’ve been in the top 2 for most of the season – partly because it has appeared that other sides haven’t wanted to go up either at some points! YET we are STILL in the preferred position.
So why does virtually every Blues fan I know not have a clue about what will happen on Sunday? Well one of our forum members made a post and I thought it summed it up really well:
We need to judge this thing over more than one game. How about, we’re inconsistent as hell?
We lose to teams we shouldn’t and win against teams we thought were impossible. Drawing at Barnsley, winning at Wolves. From that regard, we should win against Reading, but it doesn’t work like that does it.
Teams have peaks and troughs all season long and end up getting results were thought could never happen. While it is possible to approximate what the future might tell us through form, it doesn’t actually give us the big picture about training, mentality, fitness, ability or pressure.

There are a number of positives and negatives – we often play better away, Reading haven’t scored many at home recently – but we haven’t scored many recently either home OR away.
I am beside myself in regard to this game, so much so that I won’t be watching it!
(Actually that sounds very dramatic – but the truth is that it is my Mom’s 70th birthday meal Sunday afternoon!)
Let’s hope we do make it, if we don’t we do have a second shot in the play-offs. If we don’t after THAT – well I suspect there will be changes around St Andrews, and we will talk about that later.
Sorry it’s all rambling, but it sums up how I am. I’m positive and negative, nervous and confident – I know what’s going to happen, but I don’t have a clue either. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what being a Blues fan is all about!

As you mentioned above…Typical Blues.
My heart is hoping we get promoted, but my head is already telling me that we’ll be the spanking boys of the Premiership, because we have a board of Directors that are already spouting off that they will not spend “BIG” if we do get promoted!!
Believe me, and I’m sure that most Bluenoses don’t need me to tell them this. We need to buy a new defence…..end of…. wIth back ups, because the defence we have now needs to be put out to craze at the end of this year. That’s going to cost in the region of £12 to £15m
Follow this up by buying two decent midfielders, at a cost of about £5m each. To back up and strengthen the “half decent” players that we have already.
Then comes the strike force.
Philips – Good off the bench.
Jerome – Not a footie player as long as I’ve got a hole in my ass, but great pace. As per Philips…Good off the bench.
O’Connor – Unproven in the Prem. Bad in the first season, if that’s anything to go by? But has improved this year, barring injuries.
Costa – Forget it!!!
MacFadden – Not a striker…I don’t think???
Bent – Double forget it !!!
So – two strikers at a cost of £12m total.
Making a grand total of £37m (worst case) or best case, depends upon whether you’re reaping the benefits of watching them play, or paying for their services.
Ain’t going to happen. Maybe it’s best of we stop where we are aye???
Missed a major point – Manager’s not too hot either is he?
“we do have to thank Derby for crashing and burning” this is so typical of Blues fans both this year and two year ago under Bruce: didn’t we finished on more pts in 2nd spot that year than what WBA did last year when they were first? Yet we have to talk ourselves down because we couldn’t have possibly have got to 2nd this year and two years ago on merit, it would appear according to many fans (I stand to be corrected on the points but the point of argument stands).
In reality, we are good enough to be 2nd and Shef Utd have had ALOT of significant ref’ decisions go their way in the last couple of months (including a phantom goal like Reading) but we will probably finish Sunday in 4th spot.
However, we are good enough to win the play-offs because: Cardiff are out of form, Reading are more inconsistent than Blues and for all the moans vs Burnley regarding the first 35 mins at home we were the better team for most of the remainder of that game.
(One further thought, if we don’t go up and you’re in the shoes of a player who could move onto ‘better things’ in the summer, would you stay for a club where only roughly 200 fans could be bothered to stay for the end of season lap of honour – you would would hardly feel appreciated!)
I think the article sums up my feelings as well.
I’m not looking forward to Sunday – I’m nervous enough already. I dread to think what I’ll be like come kick-off time!!
Yes, it is still in our hands. Yes, we can do it. But, there is still that doubt that we’ll come up short.
We need our big guns to be firing on all cylinders on Sunday and we do need that bit of luck that every team needs in a big game.
I really we’re all celebrating shortly after 3pm on Sunday.
