I have supported Blues for 50 years through thin and thin. I have seen relegations, the club nearly going bust, shocking performances, awful behaviour by fans, poor owners, players and managers, points deductions, low attendances, being knocked out of the cup by non league sides, best players leaving and not replaced and a multitude of other bad things.
Then, there’s been those moments of last minute winners, winning by more than 4 goals, class players gracing the St Andrews pitch, strutting our stuff at the top table, promotions, the ground absolutely rocking, Wembley appearances, the odd cup win – including that special day in 2011, and of course even an European competition.
It’s that second paragraph we all enjoy, however we HAVE to go through tough times as well. The truth is, being a real fan is coping with both. It’s easy to support a team that wins all the time, but determination, character and bottle to support a team when it’s down. Rudyard Kipling nailed it when he said “If you can meet success and failure and treat them both as impostors, then you are a balanced man, my son.”
Today might end in apparent failure and disappointment, but if it does, it’s NOT the end, it’s just another experience and we’ll get through it and better times will follow, they always do.
So whatever happens today, let’s get behind the team, the manager and the board – and do our bit to try and win today. You never know, today might end up being a second paragraph memory!
