Leeds United vs Birmingham City – Preview

Team News

Leeds midfielders Rodolph Austin and Michael Tonge as well as defender Lee Peltier all missed out on Tuesday night but haven’t been ruled out yet for this match.

For a change Blues have announced that they have no new injury problems with Jonathan Spector also available after having served his suspension.

Last Meeting

The two teams met in January of this year with four goals from Nikola Zigic giving Blues a comfortable victory despite being behind early on. I bet they’re glad that he is suspended for this one.

Recent Form

Leeds are 8th and are unbeaten in their last six games.

Blues’ draw on Tuesday moved them up to 20th. Away from home this year they have a record of one win, two draws and three defeats.

What a comeback on Tuesday. Of course Millwall are a poor team on a poor run that we shouldn’t have been 3-0 down to but it still shows that the team have not lost their fight. It was also good to see Marlon King bagging the goals as I’m sure I was not alone in thinking that he was maybe a little past it. The defending really needs to improve though. What happened to the back four that were so well organised at Brighton? Jack Butland appears to be gaining confidence and cannot be blamed for the shambles in front of him. He was excellent against Leicester. It seems that under Lee Clark Blues can be counted on to be consistently inconsistent.

One of the main bright spots of the last week has been the return of Ravel Morrison after a bit of a cosy chat with the manager. He looked assured in midfield and will only improve with games. If Lee Clark can get the best out of him when Alex Ferguson and Sam Allardyce have failed then he deserves a lot of credit for this. We’ll need to give him a few more games before seeing if the new attitude is permanent though.

Leeds away is always a tough fixture but we do have a good recent record against them. In the last six meetings (Over eight years) we have lost only once. Researching this game I read on a Leeds fan site that despite reasonable results the performances have not been that great. If Charlton can get a draw there I don’t see any reason why we can’t at least achieve the same. That’s no disrespect to Charlton by the way, I just picked the most recent game. Luciano Beccio is in good scoring form this season but hopefully he will miss as many chances as he did last time against us.

Following this game we have two home fixtures against sides below us in the table so a good result tomorrow could be the start of a decent run. More likely we’ll win at Elland Road and then lose at home to Ipswich. I got the score correct last week so I’ll stick with the same. At the least I hope we can get away without anyone punching our goalie.

My prediction

Leeds 1 Blues 1

C’mon you Blue Boys.
