The Last Time We Were Promoted at St Andrews

I don’t know if you are into omens or not – I’m not particularly, however this is an interesting thing here!

The last time we got promoted at St Andrews was back in 1992 when Terry Cooper’s side beat Shrewsbury 1-0 to confirm promotion out of the then 3rd division. I personally didn’t go, but I gather it was a nervy game without much quality. Nigel Gleghorn scored the winner from an Ian Rogerson cross – in the first half I think.

Anyway we were pipped to the title, despite Saint and Greavsie, (remember them!), congratulating us on the title a week early!!

The image I remember, is the pitch being full of jubilant Blues fans and a happy looking Samesh Kumar giving a celebration clenched fist.

Why have I bought this up? Two reasons, as I said it was the last time we were promoted at home – but the other was the date.

It was 25th April 1992 (Cue the Twilight Zone music!!)

COME ON BLUES – another nervy 1-0 will do me.

  1. I wasn’t at that game but I was at the game when we needed a point at home to an average Notts County side with nothing to play for to secure promotion.

3-0 up at half time we drew 3-3. Made me realise, if I hadn’t before, that with Blues you never take ANYTHING for granted.
