Birmingham City vs Cardiff City – Brief post match thoughts

Let me start by saying that I thought a draw was probably a fair result.  Cardiff dominated possession and territory but rarely troubled Boaz Myhil wheras Blues played like the away side on the counter.  In fact we looked the most dangerous when they had just won a corner. It was no surprise that both our goal and the penalty incident came from quick counter attacks.  King’s penalty was poorly taken and made it too easy for the keeper.  Their goal came about due to poor marking from a set piece by a player who has no experience playing in that position.

The biggest problem we faced today was the lack of full backs which was particularly obvious when we had the ball.  Our wide players usually get help from the full backs overlapping but the makeshift players we had today rarely crossed the half way line. Cardiff played the ball around nicely but didn’t create much and were caught offside too often.  Curtis Davies was correctly chosen the man of the match although no one else particularly stood out.

Overall while I thought this was a match we had to win I will take a point based on yersterday’s results and the fact that we have moved back into the playoff positions.  It just puts more pressure on our remaining fixtures.

  1. The automatic promotion ship sailed when we lost to Notts Forest, which started our current slump. We simply didn’t do enough, regardless of the reason (fatigue, apparently) and now we can only concentrate on staying in the play-off places.

Will we win them? I don’t know. But not winning them could cause problems that I really don’t want to think about.

  2. Draw keeps us in the play off hunt. If we can stay with the pack and get our squad fit and revitalized again for (hopefully the last 3 games of the season including Wembley) then it will be a typical Blues season.
    KRO

  3. Why the substitution for ibanez ! When he went off n”daw went to left back and cardiff scored.
is the best of ramage yet to come as from what i have seen of him so far makes you wonder how bad darren carter was as to not get a contract. Ramage on several occasions passed the ball STRAIGHT to a cardiff player. Really missed keith fahey who is by far our most creative player.
Agree davies was man of the match, king and huseklepp worked hard up front and burke tried to make things happen and made a great run for the goal.
Few more twists and turns to come yet. k.r.o.

  4. The only consolation out of the game is that Blues moved back into a play off position. Im afraid we are going to have to get 3 points at Doncaster on friday and Blues have enjoyed great success in that part of the woods this season so i fancy them to get the win there.
