Operation Hernia is a surgical programme intended to treat and teach inguinal hernia surgery in low and middle income countries.
It began in 2005 in Takoradi, Ghana but now also operates in several other sites in Ghana and also in Rwanda, Uganda and Botswana.
Mr Chris Oppong, Consultant Surgeon, is the current Chairman of Operation Hernia.
“There are countless untreated hernias in Africa.”
In many rural areas of the world basic surgical services are not available and there is little possibility that Governments will be able to provide such facilities in the near future. Partnerships are required between charities such as Operation Hernia and other NGOs in order to provide surgical care delivered by teams of enthusiastic volunteers.
